Joe and Barbara Conroy, photographer and author of

RESTAURANT CHINA
Identification and Value Guide for
Restaurant, Airline, Ship and Railroad Dinnerware
Volumes 1 and 2

In the early 1980s my husband, Joe (standing at left in the photo above taken during a late 1990s Christmas party), ran across a creamer at a flea market. Because we already had far too many collections, I begged him not to buy it, knowing it would be just the beginning. When I couldn't convince him, at least he promised not to buy creamers with handles (cream pitchers). Time passed..... and we were hooked. Needless to say the collection grew and grew. Eventually we realized that there is no other collectible that is functional, durable, attractive, and fascinating, while offering a great sense of nostalgia and history, as well as satisfying a broad spectrum of interests (e.g., railroad, steamship, airline, military, western theme, casino, hotel, restaurant, soda shop and drug store, sports, and so on). It was that lone creamer that lead to the publication of 1024 pages in two volumes by Collector Books sixteen years later. Many ask if there will be a third volume..... perhaps in a few years. In the meantime, there are rumors that a number of books on specific subjects are in the works; examples include military china, as well as steamship china. We can only hope this information is true and these references will be in print as soon as possible.

Regarding Assistance

After collecting for more than twenty-five years, including six-plus years of day and night research, one would think that I should know or at least know how to locate just about anything regarding commercial china. That is certainly not the case. My knowledge is but a drop in a very large well. It would take several lifetimes and a large library filled with all current and discarded manufacturer records to acquire and assimilate such a large body of information. However, it is my hope that Restaurant China Volume 1 and Volume 2 will provide the basic information necessary to enjoy the hobby.

Due to overwhelming personal responsibilities, I am unable to answer email regarding restaurant china at this time.
